SUMMARY:Wojciech Naworcki
DESCRIPTION:Intervenant : Wojciech Naworcki (Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique)\n\nEfficiency of photosynthesis: Energy losses on picoseconds-to-yers timescales\nPhotosynthesis is a fundamentally important process on Earth. The conversion of light into chemically useful energy is essential for virtually all life, either directly (photosynthetic organisms) or indirectly (herbivores and their predators). It also largely sustains human activities via combustion of fossil fuels.\nLike in every energy conversion process, energy losses take place during the light-fuelled CO2 capture. In the talk, I will introduce the process of photosynthesis, discussing its steps from picoseconds to hours. This will be followed by an analysis of the energetic losses on all levels and timescales, both in plants and photosynthetic microbes. Finally, I will discuss potential pathways to improve photosynthesis, and how food production could be analysed from an energetic efficiency perspective.\n\n
