Over the past decades, China has built up a dominant position on the value chain of energy and digital technologies through domestic mining, refining and manufacturing. Chinese foreign direct investments (FDI) in the metal sector are integral to this strategy: by investing abroad, Chinese firms establish a global value chain system that contributes to securing the supply of raw materials (copper ore, cobalt ore, etc.) for domestic industries. By assessing Chinese FDI in the metal sector from 2005-2024 with quantitative and qualitative analysis, this presentation will address the following questions: What are the key trends and patterns of Chinese foreign direct investments in the metal sector regarding their evolution and geographic distribution? How are these investments integrated into China’s global political strategy? What are the effects of these investments on the supply chains of energy transition technologies?\n
